About the role

Edge Consultants is currently seeking to hire a Senior Mechanical/HVAC Engineer with specialized expertise in sustainable design, energy efficiency, and building energy simulation to support the firm’s growing energy modeling division. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership within our team in Vancouver. They will be responsible for managing, and delivering simulation assignments, mentoring and developing energy modelling staff, and working with the leadership team to grow our consultancy.

The qualified candidate will have considerable background in energy-efficient building design and simulation, energy analysis studies, energy management, and incentive programs. Expert knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, building control systems, building envelope design, energy conservation measures, greenhouse gas emissions, and building energy simulation programs are expected. Exceptional communication skills, the ability to provide excellent client service, and a commitment to sustainable design are essential for this position.

The applicant should be self-directed and passionate about sustainability. The ideal applicant will have the flexibility and capacity to work on a wide variety of projects and demonstrate a capability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams. The individual will support a client-facing team and coordinate tasks to achieve project goals.

The position is a senior role based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • An engineering degree in a relevant field such as mechanical, HVAC or building services.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license through EGBC or eligible for registration as P.Eng.
  • A minimum of two years of direct modeling experience using IES virtual environment software, with technical proficiency using APACHE HVAC to build complex HVAC networks and their associated control sequences.
  • A minimum of four years of design experience, preferably in building HVAC design (including control sequences).
  • Proven examples of projects which have been directly impacted and benefited from the use of energy modelling software.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations to verify accuracy of modelled results.
  • Experience interfacing with developers, general contractors, and consultants.
  • Networking experience and an ability to develop leads for future work.
  • Familiarity with the sustainable building rating tools such as LEED, WELL, Zero Carbon Building, City of Vancouver sustainable design requirements, etc.
  • An understanding of local and regional energy codes, including but not limited to NECB, ASHRAE 90.1, BC Step Code, and VBBL.
  • Familiarity with the LEED green rating system, particularly the energy modeling associated with the LEED EA energy modeling credits.
  • Experience preparing energy modelling documentation and submittals.
  • Experience developing and mentoring junior engineers and modellers.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting architectural, mechanical, and electrical design drawings.

In addition to the above experience, you should have:

  • An excellent level of both written and spoken English.
  • A personable character with an ability to foster good working relationships with clients.
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical analysis, concepts and idea.
  • Strong client-facing and time management skills.
  • The ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • A proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel to create tools, manage workflows, and present data.
  • An ability to use Microsoft Word, Lucid Chart, PowerPoint for report writing, presentation and illustrations.
  • The skills to guide and assist project designers on solutions affecting building energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The ability to work closely with architects and mechanical and electrical engineers to assess the commercial viability of various energy strategies and systems.
  • Skills to evaluate and analyze various building energy-saving measures by performing iterative modeling.
  • Skills to develop training material and engineering tools for staff.
  • An appreciation for the importance of documentation and quality management standards.
  • A desire to improve internal processes and procedures to improve efficiency and quality.
  • The skills to support RFP process, contract, invoicing, administration, and senior management.
