Edge is Hiring an Intermediate Mechanical Designer

About the role:

Edge Consultants is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Designer to contribute to the design of high performance mechanical systems as part of our integrated team. The ideal candidate will bring 2 to 4 years of experience in designing low carbon, high energy efficiency mechanical systems for a variety of building types, and is looking to deepen their technical skills while taking on increasing ownership of design tasks. 

Working as a part of the mechanical engineering team at Edge, the successful candidate will fulfil the role of mechanical designer across all project stages, from concept through construction, working closely with senior engineers and the broader project team. We are looking for a technically driven individual with strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to realizing energy and carbon reductions through high performance building design. 

This position is based in Vancouver, BC. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work within the integrated Edge team on HVAC and plumbing system design for a variety of building types, supporting the delivery of high performance mechanical solutions. 
  • Fulfil the role of mechanical designer at all project stages, from concept design through construction administration, under the guidance of a Project Manager or Senior Designer. 
  • Prepare detailed mechanical drawings, schematics, and layouts using Revit and AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project requirements. 
  • Conduct system sizing, load calculations, and equipment selections for HVAC and plumbing systems. 
  • Research, interpret, and apply relevant codes, standards, and guidelines, including ASHRAE, CSA, NBC, BCBC, VBBL, and local building codes, to design work. 
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to develop mechanical design strategies and ensure systems meet project performance objectives. 
  • Develop reports, equipment schedules, specifications, and design documentation for project team members and clients. 
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly into overall building designs. 
  • Communicate mechanical design requirements clearly to clients, architects, and project team members in a professional manner. 
  • Support project workflows including coordination of design information, integration of consultant and contractor inputs, review of shop drawings, periodic QA/QC check ins, and documentation updates to maintain alignment with project requirements. 
  • Liaise with authorities, clients, contractors, and suppliers to help ensure project goals and code compliance are achieved. 
  • Support sustainability initiatives by assisting with energy conservation measure assessments and contributing to LEED, Zero Carbon Building, and other green certification documentation. 
  • Assist in energy transition planning by supporting the design of systems compatible with electrification and low carbon energy strategies. 
  • Stay current with building codes, energy policies, and industry best practices relevant to mechanical systems design. 
  • Contribute to internal process improvement efforts, including the development of templates, tools, and design standards. 
  • Support the achievement of personal and team based Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) aligned with company priorities. 

We would love to hear from you if you have the following

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering Technology. 
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in the design of building mechanical systems. 
  • C.Tech, Engineer in Training (EIT) designation or working toward P.Eng registration with EGBC. 
  • LEED accreditation or demonstrated interest in sustainability related credentials is an asset. 
  • Foundational technical knowledge of HVAC system design, plumbing, fire protection, and building performance concepts. 
  • Ability to perform system sizing, load calculations, and equipment selections for HVAC and plumbing systems. 
  • Working knowledge of relevant building codes and standards, including ASHRAE, CSA, NBC, BCBC, and VBBL. 
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit for mechanical design and documentation. 
  • Familiarity with energy modelling tools such as IES Virtual Environment is an asset. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting. 
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate and well coordinated design documents. 
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and take on increasing responsibility over time. 
  • Proactive mindset with a desire to contribute to a high performance team culture. 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range $70,000 to $80,000 
  • Twice yearly performance bonuses tied to clear, transparent Objectives and Key Results.

  • Early finish every Friday at 12:30 PM, every week of the year. 
  • Position starts with 4 weeks paid vacation.
  • This position is primarily office based, located in Vancouver, allowing for optimal team collaboration and a hands on approach to learning our processes and systems. After an initial period of integration and performance evaluation, typically six months, we offer the flexibility to incorporate some remote work into your schedule. This hybrid approach is designed to balance effective teamwork and in person interaction with the convenience and flexibility that remote work provides.
