About the role:
Edge Consultants is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to take a leading role in the design of high performance mechanical systems as part of our integrated team. The ideal candidate will bring 5 to 8 years of experience in designing low carbon, high energy efficiency mechanical systems for a diverse range of building types, with the confidence to drive technical decision making and deliver complex projects with increasing autonomy.
Reporting to the Mechanical Project Manager at Edge, the successful candidate will fulfil the role of mechanical designer at all project stages, from concept through construction, while also supporting project coordination, mentoring junior staff, and engaging directly with clients and project stakeholders. We are looking for a technically strong individual with excellent communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to delivering high performance, sustainable building solutions.
This position is based in Vancouver, BC.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work within the integrated Edge team on HVAC and plumbing system design for a variety of building types, leading technical design work and contributing to the delivery of high performance mechanical solutions.
- Fulfil the role of mechanical designer at all project stages, from concept design through construction administration, with a high degree of technical ownership and independence.
- Prepare and oversee the development of detailed mechanical drawings, schematics, and layouts using Revit and AutoCAD, ensuring quality, accuracy, and coordination across disciplines.
- Lead system sizing, load calculations, and equipment selections for HVAC and plumbing systems, applying sound engineering judgement to optimize performance and constructability.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to develop mechanical design strategies that meet project performance, sustainability, and budget objectives.
- Develop and review reports, equipment schedules, specifications, and design documentation, ensuring completeness and technical accuracy.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly into overall building designs, proactively identifying and resolving conflicts.
- Communicate mechanical design requirements and recommendations effectively to clients, architects, and project team members, including in client meetings and presentations.
- Lead and support project workflows including coordination of design information, integration of consultant and contractor inputs, review of shop drawings, QA/QC check ins, and documentation updates to maintain alignment with project requirements.
- Provide technical guidance on HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems, with a focus on energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and constructability.
- Contribute to energy transition planning by designing systems compatible with electrification and low carbon energy strategies, including impact analysis for existing and future systems.
- Mentor and support intermediate and junior engineers through design reviews, technical coaching, and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed on evolving building codes, energy policies, and industry best practices, sharing insights with clients and internal teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by refining internal processes, tools, and design standards.
- Support the achievement of personal and team based Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) aligned with company priorities.
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
